Data Storage Converter

Convert bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and the binary KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB — decimal and binary units are never mixed.

How to use this tool

Steps for using the Unit Converter.

  1. Type a number into From — gigabytes are preselected. Commas and scientific notation such as 2.5e3 are accepted.
  2. Pick the units to convert between; the result in megabytes (or whichever unit you choose) updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.
  3. Set the decimal places, turn on Show formula to see the calculation, and copy or share the result.
  4. Below the converter, the table lists every digital information unit with its exact definition, and the links open dedicated pages for the most common pairs.

Example

1 terabytes to gibibytes

Value
1 TB
Result
931.322575 GiB

Formula: GiB = TB × 931.3225746

Common use cases

  • Storage and file sizes.
  • Explaining drive capacities shown by Windows.
  • Memory limits and quotas in cloud and container configs.

About digital information units

Data sizes use two sets of prefixes. Decimal (SI) units go up in powers of 1,000: 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1 GB = 10⁹ bytes. Storage makers, network speeds and macOS use these. Binary (IEC) units go up in powers of 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes, 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. RAM, Linux tools and Windows (which labels them “GB”) count in binary.

That's why a “1 TB” drive appears as about 931 GB in Windows: 10¹² bytes ÷ 1024³ ≈ 931 GiB. This converter never mixes the two — pick the kB/MB/GB or KiB/MiB/GiB units you actually mean. A byte is 8 bits; network speeds are given in bits per second, file sizes in bytes.

Limitations

  • Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

In SI units 1 GB = 1,000 MB. 1,024 is the binary relationship: 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Both are offered here, kept separate.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

The drive has 10¹² bytes; Windows divides by 1024³ and labels the result “GB”, giving 931 (really GiB).

How many bits are in a byte?

8.

Are these digital information conversions exact?

Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
