Volume Converter

Convert liters, milliliters, cubic meters, US gallons, quarts, cups and fluid ounces — with US customary and UK imperial units kept apart.

How to use this tool

Steps for using the Unit Converter.

  1. Type a number into From — liters are preselected. Commas and scientific notation such as 2.5e3 are accepted.
  2. Pick the units to convert between; the result in US gallons (or whichever unit you choose) updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.
  3. Set the decimal places, turn on Show formula to see the calculation, and copy or share the result.
  4. Below the converter, the table lists every volume unit with its exact definition, and the links open dedicated pages for the most common pairs.

Example

10 liters to US gallons

Common use cases

  • Recipes that use cups, fluid ounces or milliliters.
  • Fuel and liquids sold in liters, US gallons or UK gallons.
  • Tank, pool and container capacities in liters and cubic meters.

About volume units

The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter; the liter is exactly one cubic decimeter (1/1,000 m³) and a milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter.

US customary and UK imperial units have the same names but different sizes. The US gallon is 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L); the imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L, about 20% larger. Fluid ounces differ too: a US fl oz is 29.5735 mL, an imperial fl oz 28.4131 mL — and there are 128 US fl oz in a US gallon but 160 imperial fl oz in an imperial gallon. This converter keeps them as separate units.

The US cup here is the customary cup, 1/16 US gallon (236.59 mL). Recipes from Australia, Canada and elsewhere often use a 250 mL metric cup, and US nutrition labels use a 240 mL “legal” cup.

Limitations

  • Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).

Frequently asked questions

How many liters are in a gallon?

A US gallon is 3.785 L; an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 L. Pick the right one in the converter — the difference is about 20%.

Is a mL the same as a cm³?

Yes, exactly. A milliliter is one cubic centimeter, and a liter is 1,000 cm³.

How many mL are in a cup?

A US customary cup is 236.59 mL. A metric cup is 250 mL, and the US legal cup on nutrition labels is 240 mL.

Are these volume conversions exact?

Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
