How to use this tool
Steps for using the Unit Converter.
- Type a number into From — grams per cubic centimeter are preselected. Commas and scientific notation such as 2.5e3 are accepted.
- Pick the units to convert between; the result in kilograms per cubic meter (or whichever unit you choose) updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.
- Set the decimal places, turn on Show formula to see the calculation, and copy or share the result.
- Below the converter, the table lists every density unit with its exact definition, and the links open dedicated pages for the most common pairs.
Example
7.85 grams per cubic centimeter to kilograms per cubic meter
7.85 g/cm³7,850 kg/m³
Formula: kg/m³ = g/cm³ × 1000Common use cases
- Material properties (steel ≈ 7.85 g/cm³, aluminium ≈ 2.7 g/cm³).
- Liquids and fuels.
- Converting engineering data between SI and US units.

About density units
Density is mass per volume. The SI unit is kg/m³; g/cm³ (equal to g/mL and kg/L) is common for liquids and solids because water is close to 1 g/cm³ (1,000 kg/m³).
US engineering uses pounds per cubic foot or per cubic inch, and liquids are often described in pounds per US gallon (water ≈ 8.34 lb/gal).
Limitations
- Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).
Frequently asked questions
How many kg/m³ is 1 g/cm³?
1,000 kg/m³.
What is the density of water?
About 1,000 kg/m³ (0.998 g/cm³ at 20 °C), or 62.4 lb/ft³.
Are g/mL and g/cm³ the same?
Yes, because 1 mL = 1 cm³.
Are these density conversions exact?
Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
