Resistance Converter

Convert mΩ, Ω, kΩ and MΩ for resistor values, schematics and multimeter readings.

How to use this tool

Steps for using the Unit Converter.

  1. Type a number into From — kilohms are preselected. Commas and scientific notation such as 2.5e3 are accepted.
  2. Pick the units to convert between; the result in ohms (or whichever unit you choose) updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.
  3. Set the decimal places, turn on Show formula to see the calculation, and copy or share the result.
  4. Below the converter, the table lists every electrical resistance unit with its exact definition, and the links open dedicated pages for the most common pairs.

Example

4.7 kilohms to ohms

Value
4.7 kΩ
Result
4,700 Ω

Formula: Ω = kΩ × 1000

Common use cases

  • Resistor values and colour codes.
  • Multimeter readings.
  • Ohm's law calculations (V = I × R).

About electrical resistance units

The ohm is the SI unit of resistance, one volt per ampere. Resistors range from milliohms (current-sense resistors) to megohms (insulation and input resistances).

Schematics often write the multiplier in place of the decimal point: 4k7 means 4.7 kΩ and 1M5 means 1.5 MΩ.

Limitations

  • Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).

Frequently asked questions

How many ohms are in a kilohm?

1,000 Ω.

What does 4k7 mean?

4.7 kΩ — the “k” replaces the decimal point to avoid misreading a faint dot.

What is a megohm used for?

Insulation resistance, input resistance of meters and amplifiers, and high-value pull-up resistors.

Are these electrical resistance conversions exact?

Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
