About mass units
In everyday language, kilograms and pounds are called weight units, but they measure mass — the amount of matter in an object. Strictly, weight is a force (measured in newtons) that depends on gravity; a 10 kg suitcase has the same mass on the Moon but weighs less there. For everyday use on Earth the two are used interchangeably.
The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. The international pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so the ounce (1/16 lb), the stone (14 lb) and every other avoirdupois unit has an exact metric value. The metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg — not to be confused with the US short ton (2,000 lb) or the UK long ton (2,240 lb).
Limitations
- Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
1 kg = 2.20462 lb. One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
Are these troy ounces?
No. These are avoirdupois ounces (28.3495 g), used for food and everyday goods. Gold and silver are weighed in troy ounces of 31.1035 g.
How do I convert stones and pounds to kg?
Multiply the stones by 14 and add the pounds to get pounds, then convert: 11 st 4 lb = 158 lb ≈ 71.67 kg.
Are these mass conversions exact?
Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
