About area units
Area is length squared, so area factors are the square of length factors: a meter is 3.28084 ft, but a square meter is 3.28084² ≈ 10.7639 square feet. Forgetting to square the factor is the most common area-conversion mistake.
For land, the hectare (100 m × 100 m = 10,000 m²) is used in most countries and the acre (43,560 ft², exactly 4,046.8564224 m²) in the US and UK. One hectare is about 2.471 acres.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square meter?
1 m² = 10.7639 ft². One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m².
How big is a hectare?
10,000 m² — a square 100 m on each side, about 2.47 acres or roughly 1.4 football (soccer) pitches.
Why can't I multiply by 3.28 to get square feet?
Because area has two dimensions: the length factor must be squared (3.28084² ≈ 10.764).
