How to use this tool
Steps for using the Unit Converter.
- Type a number into From — newton meters are preselected. Commas and scientific notation such as 2.5e3 are accepted.
- Pick the units to convert between; the result in pound-force feet (or whichever unit you choose) updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.
- Set the decimal places, turn on Show formula to see the calculation, and copy or share the result.
- Below the converter, the table lists every torque unit with its exact definition, and the links open dedicated pages for the most common pairs.
Example

About torque units
Torque is force times lever distance. The SI unit is the newton meter (N·m). In the US, bolt and engine specs use pound-force feet (lbf·ft, “foot-pounds”) — about 1.3558 N·m — or pound-force inches for small fasteners.
Torque and energy share the dimension N·m, but they're different quantities; torque is never expressed in joules.
Limitations
- Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).
Frequently asked questions
How many N·m is 1 ft-lb?
1 lbf·ft ≈ 1.3558 N·m.
How do I convert N·m to in-lb?
Multiply by about 8.8507: 10 N·m ≈ 88.5 lbf·in.
Is N·m the same as joules?
The dimensions match, but torque and energy are different quantities. Torque is always written N·m.
Are these torque conversions exact?
Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
