Capacitance Converter

Convert F, mF, µF, nF and pF — for capacitor markings, filter design and RC time constants.

How to use this tool

Steps for using the Unit Converter.

  1. Type a number into From — microfarads are preselected. Commas and scientific notation such as 2.5e3 are accepted.
  2. Pick the units to convert between; the result in nanofarads (or whichever unit you choose) updates as you type. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.
  3. Set the decimal places, turn on Show formula to see the calculation, and copy or share the result.
  4. Below the converter, the table lists every electrical capacitance unit with its exact definition, and the links open dedicated pages for the most common pairs.

Example

0.1 microfarads to nanofarads

Value
0.1 µF
Result
100 nF

Formula: nF = µF × 1000

Common use cases

  • Reading capacitor markings.
  • Filter and timing (RC) calculations.
  • Choosing replacement capacitors.

About electrical capacitance units

The farad is the SI unit of capacitance, one coulomb per volt. It's a very large unit, so circuits use microfarads, nanofarads and picofarads; only supercapacitors reach whole farads.

Ceramic capacitors are marked with a three-digit code in picofarads: 104 means 10 × 10⁴ pF = 100,000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 µF.

Limitations

  • Results are rounded for display only; the calculation keeps full precision (15 significant digits).

Frequently asked questions

How many nF are in a µF?

1,000 nF.

What does capacitor code 104 mean?

100 nF (0.1 µF): the first two digits are 10, followed by 4 zeros, in picofarads.

Is “mF” millifarad or microfarad?

In SI it's millifarad (10⁻³ F). Older US parts sometimes used “mF” or “mfd” for microfarad, so check the context.

Are these electrical capacitance conversions exact?

Each unit is defined from its official definition (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). Results are calculated in double precision and only rounded to the decimal places you choose when shown.
